  • Course DescriptionAn overview for alterations on existing buildings for Accessibility even with no construction planned. This includes a review of requirements per 2010 ADA Standards for Barrier Removal for Places of Public Accommodation/Commercial Facilities as well as Program Accommodation for Public Entities (State & Local government). We will also look at Alteration requirements for 2010 ADA & CBC including disproportionality and Path of Travel. And included will be a brief overview of historic building requirements for Accessibility.

This seminar will be a bit different from other Stepping Thru Accessibility seminars in that we will also address specific issues you may have on existing projects. Please provide an existing condition you would like discussed using a PDF of the drawing or a photo of the item, along with a brief description of your question (and your phone # if we need clarification) to: info@SteppingThruAccessibility.com and enter Existing Bldgs Seminar in the email Subject. Remove all proprietary information. You can provide us with more than one question, but send it via separate emails. This will not ensure that we will use your question in the seminar. We are also presuming that if you have submitted a question with PDFs that you are giving STA permission to incorporate it into the seminar.

  • InstructorJanis Kent, AIA, CASp, Stepping Thru Accessibility - Janis Kent, AIA CASp is a Certified Access Specialist (CASp) and a licensed California Architect and has been involved in the world of Accessibility since the mid-1980's. In addition to having managed a variety of architectural projects, she has surveyed buildings for accessibility compliance and provided quality control for existing facilities throughout the country. Recently she authored a book which is a compilation of architectural details on Accessibility combining ADA with CBC. She has been asked to speak on Accessibility at a variety of venues from the Dwell Mobius conventions in LA, the National AIA Convention in New Orleans, to a number of local AIA Chapters, and the State Chapter of CCAIA has recorded one of her seminars. She also has been invited to speak at several business associations. Ms. Kent is the Founding President of the Certified Access Specialist Institute (CASI), serves on the Cerritos College Architectural Advisory committee, is on the Board of Directors for the AIA-Long Beach/South Bay chapter, and on the aecKnowledge Editorial Committee. She is also an invited Subject Matter Expert for the State DSA-AB Access Committee. Janis received her M.Arch from the University of California, LA and is currently the principal of Stepping Thru Accessibility in Long Beach California.
